I set out at 5:30 A.M. yesterday for a day trip to Porcupine Mountains State Park on Lake Superior in the UP of Michigan. The weather wasn’t the greatest, but it wasn’t a complete washout. Imperfect weather can make for some nice photos too. It was foggy from the time I left until I went through Tomahawk. After that, it was just overcast skies with periodic rain for the rest of the drive up.
I stopped at Rib Mountain in Wausau on the way up. The fog was still pretty dense, but I drove up anyway to take a look around. It was about 8:45, and I had the park to myself.

I was at Rib Mountain for about 20 minuets, then I jumped back on the freeway. I still had three more hours of driving to get to the “Porkies.”

I arrived at the park around 1:00 P.M. (Eastern Time). My decision to head to the Porcupine Mountains was swayed by of some photos I saw while doing a little research for before my trip. There wasn’t any fog in those photos. The fog had lifted, but not enough to uncover the mountain tops (These are small mountains. The highest peak in a bit under 2000 feet). This overlook was pretty accessible, just a few yards from the parking lot.

This spot was a 30 minute hike from the road, and was actually where the photos I saw where taken from. It’s only about a mile east from the other overlook, but the fog was much more dense here. Lake of the Clouds is directly below, so that may have had something to do with it.

From there, I got back in the car and started to drive around the southern part of the park. There were a few waterfalls that were just a couple short hikes from the road that runs through the park. The first was Overlooked Falls.

Finally there was Manido Falls. I like this waterfall the most. It was the most interesting one and it was the subject for the photo I like the most. I took this one shortly after sunset, so it was my last. I drove through a couple heavy downpours on the way home, but I arrived back in Milwaukee at 12:30 this morning.
