Rocks

I went for a ride on the motorcycle today. I wasn’t heading anywhere particular when I seen a sign telling me Portage was 30 miles ahead. Once in Portage, Baraboo was only 13 more miles. From there, it’s 2 miles to Devil’s Lake. Since I was so close, there was one photo I’ve wanted to make in the past, but could get my equipment to cooperate. The reason I took the short hike up the East Bluff was a small cave. That’s it above. All I wanted to do was play around with my flashes and light up the inside. The photo probably would have looked like crap, but it’s one I wanted to try nonetheless. Again, I didn’t set out to take this picture when I left home, but I ended up here and I had everything I needed. Now, when I’m on the motorcycle, I don’t carry my big camera bag, I transfer a select few items to a smaller bag that fits better on the bike. I bring the same items every time. The camera, three lenses, a flash, shutter release remote (plus a tripod, but that doesn’t go in the camera bag), a cloth for wiping off the lens, and a dust blower. In addition to these, this time I packed my newly purchased radio triggers for my flash.

I walked up there and looked around a bit to get an idea of how to light this thing up. I already had the camera out and on the tripod. In fact, I had opened the camera bag a handful of times when I stopped to take pictures on the hike up. I changed lenses a couple times. You should see the pictures I took of the needles on a pine tree (they have been deleted). Anyway, now I had a rough game plan on how I wanted to tackle this. I’d put my flash somewhere in the little cave, and take a photo. Then I’d move the flash or camera or both and try it again. Eventually, I’d realize this was a dumb idea and give up. When I take a photo, the only thing I foresee is the pending failure of said photo. But this time, my forgetfulness foreshadowed this failure. I’d left the flash at home. I showed up at my little league game with a bat, but no glove.  [end of story]

So then I just photographed various rocks (with natural light, obviously).

Something extra for those who bothered to scroll down this far…

I stopped along the side of the road to photograph a barn (ugh…) on my way into Baraboo when this hawk with a fish in it talons flew by. I happened to have the 300mm lens on and captured one sharp-ish shot of it. It wasn’t very close. In fact,  this is cropped so much it just barely exceeds the 800 pixels wide I usually post here on the blog.  I wasn’t next to a lake, so I don’t where it caught that fish.
